‘Ma Perkins’ Program Celebrates Seventh Anniversary

“MA PERKINS,” popular daytime serial, reached its seventh anniversary on the air last week, with the seventh anniversary of its network debut in December.  Virginia Payne, who plays the title role, and Charles Eggleston, heard as Shuffle, are the only members of the original cast still heard on the show. . . . . The sponsor of “Pepper Young’s Family” will have 19 other network programs this fall, a new radio record . . . NBC starts a new sponsored series, “the Dreamer,” over the Red network . . . H. V. Kaltenborn, now broadcasting his commentary periods from abroad via CBS, will be heard Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 4:30 p.m. for an oil sponsor starting Sept. 25. . . . Carson Robison and his Buckaroos, now appearing abroad, return to this country for microphone sponsorship over the NBC-Blue network and will be heard Fridays at 7:30 p.m., starting Oct. 13. . . . A new program, “Youth vs. Age,” starring Cal Tinney, will ride the NBC-Blue network channel Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., starting Oct. 7. . . . The last guest master of ceremonies on “Hobby Lobby” will be Lowell Thomas, who takes over the show for the Aug. 30 broadcast over the NBC-Blue network.  Dave Elman, who regularly conducts the series, returns Sept. 6 following a vacation which was lengthened because of an emergency appendectomy.

Gladys Swarthout’s concert at the Washington park Temple of Music tonight will be broadcast by WTMJ from 9:30 to 10 o’clock.  Announcer George Comte will act as commentator for the entire concert and will announce the portions to be broadcast.

Barn Dance Contract

The “National Barn Dance,” which was heard from the Wisconsin state fair last Saturday night, has been given another 52 week contract over NBC.  The program is broadcast by WTMJ Saturdays at 9. . . . John Archur, winner of the “Gateway to Hollywood” auditions, now appearing on CBS Sundays in an adaptation of “Career,” was a Milwaukee visitor Tuesday.  He reports that he will return to Hollywood in September to co-star with Barbara Read in “Distant Fields,” a Warner picture. . . . Skinnay Ennis and his orchestra, set to appear again on the Bob Hope show in September, will open at the Mark Hopkins hotel, San Francisco, Friday night. . . . Elliott Roosevelt, whose much discussed talks have been heard only in the east and in Texas, will get a coast to coast Mutual network Sept. 2.  He will be heard at 7 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. . . . Sponsors of the “Mr. District Attorney” program plan to ask listeners whether or not they want the program to stay on the air all winter.  If the majority vote in the affirmative, the client will keep the show and also retain Bob Hope.
