Radio Show is Sued on Slander Charge
Economist Says He Was Called a Red

September 10, 1949

NEW YORK—William W. Remington, a Department of Commerce economist, sued owners of the Meet the Press television show for $100,000 damages for slander today, charging one of the program participants called him a Communist.

The suit, filed yesterday, named Lawrence P. Spivak, Martha Rountree and Press Productions, Inc.  Mr. Remington charged the defendants were a party to the alleged slander when they brought Elizabeth T. Bentley, former Communist, on the program.  Miss Bentley allegedly made the accusation against Mr. Remington on the telecast Sept. 12, 1948.

Mr. Remington, who was cleared of Communist charges by a loyalty board early this year, filed a similar suit against Miss Bentley nearly a year ago.

The suit named General Foods and the National Broadcasting Co.  The defendants filed a motion for dismissal which is being considered by Federal Judge Edward A. Conger.
